Heat pump sales hit a historic high in Europe
In recent years, heat pumps have become increasingly popular in Europe, with nearly 3 million heat pumps sold throughout Europe in 2022, an increase of nearly 40% compared to the previous year. The accelerated promotion of heat pumps will also make a significant contribution to the broader decarbonization goals of the European Union, and improve local air quality by replacing coal-fired and oil-fired boilers.
In northern Europe, heat pumps have long been widely used as heating solutions, with sales of heat pumps per household being almost five times higher than in other regions of Europe. Similarly, in terms of new sales in 2022, Nordic and Baltic countries have the highest share of air source heat pump equipment, accounting for approximately 50% to 80% of installed capacity. In Germany and Poland, air water heat pumps are the preferred technology.
In order to align with all existing national energy and climate commitments globally, heat pumps must meet nearly 20% of global building heating needs by 2030. If the global new installed capacity continues to grow at a similar rate as in the past two years, the world is almost expected to reach this milestone. However, if the world is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, global heat pump sales will need to grow at an annual rate of over 15% over this decade, and energy conversion still has a long way to go.
